The Bulls Masters under 16 Youth Cup begins in Cairns on Monday the 15th of December, It has been a crucial tournament for emerging Regional Queensland Talent since 2016. As different to the Country Challenge, the Southern zones have dominated the Youth Cup over the years with Darling Downs, South East Queensland and the Sunshine Coast sharing the title in all but one of the year’s (2018 when Mackay/Whitsundays Nitros won).
The event will again run in Cairns with the home side, Far North Fusion hoping to go one better than their narrow defeat in the final last year. In fact last year’s final was so close that when the teams went off for rain deep into the Stormers run chase, Far North were ahead and with time winding down, many considered that that no more play would happen and the Fusion would claim their maiden title. However, the SEQ Stormers got back on and chased down the runs in the final over to win their second Youth Cup.
That wasn’t even the closest final we’ve seen, with the 2023 final between SEQ Stormers and the Sunshine Coast Scorchers being tied, and then needing TWO super overs to be separated with the Scorchers coming out on top for back to back titles.
