1995 was one of the greatest year’s to be a Queenslander.
In March of that year, Queensland defied 69 years of heartache to win their first ever Sheffield Shield title since they were included into the National domestic cricket competition in 1926/27.
They had finished second an astonishing 13 times in the proceeding seasons and many suggested they could indeed be cursed, however with Stuart Law as captain, a team that included Allan Border, Matthew Hayden, Martin Love, Trevor Barsby, Jimmy Maher, Wade Seccombe, Andy Bichel, Carl Rackemann, Dirk Tazelaar, Paul Jackson, Michael Kasprowcz (12th man) and coach John Buchanan finally delivered Queensland the Shield in emphatic fashion.
1995 also saw the Super League war impact on the State of Origin Series. With the Brisbane Broncos, Canberra Raiders, North Queensland Cowboys and Canterbury amongst the ARL teams defecting to the Super League. This effectively wiped out 12 of the 17 Queensland players from the year before from eligibility for the 1995 State of Origin.
The rest is history, as Paul “Fatty” Vautin coached a side dubbed “Neville Nobodies” to an astonishing three nil State of Origin series win when they were not expected to be competitive in any games due to the overwhelming strength of New South Wales who were almost at full-strength.
It is 30 years since those remarkable achievements for the State of Queensland, and the Bulls Masters and FOGS are throwing a celebration and YOU are invited!
